چکیده

This paper presents a survey of the work done in modeling deformable objects within the computer graphics research community. The research has a long history and a wide variety of approaches have been used. This paper organizes the diversity of research by the technique used rather than by the application, although applications are discussed throughout. This paper presents some purely geometric approaches for modeling deformable objects, but focuses on physically based approaches. In the latter category are mass-spring models, nite element models, approximate continuum models, and low degree of freedom models. Special emphasis is placed on nite element models, which o er the greatest accuracy, but have seen limited use in computer graphics. The paper also suggests important areas for future research.

Deformable Models: Classic, Topology-Adaptive and Generalized Formulations

Deformable models” refers to a class of physics-based modeling methods with an extensive track record in computer vision, medical imaging, computer graphics, geometric design, and related areas. Unlike the Eulerian (fluid) formulations associated with level set methods, deformable models are characterized by Lagrangian (solid) formulations, three variants of which are reviewed herein.

Towards Realistic Soft Tissue Modeling in Medical Simulation

Most of today's medical simulation systems are based on geometric representations of anatomical structures that take no account of their physical nature. Representing physical phenomena and, more speci cally the realistic modeling of soft tissue will not only improve current medical simulation systems but will considerably enlarge the set of applications and the credibility of medical simulatio...

Deformable Models for Biomedical Data Analysis

The rapid development of computer and noninvasive sensor technologies is revolutionizing medicine, offering scientists and physicians powerful new investigative and diagnostic tools. Computer-based medical image analysis is an especially challenging task which has not kept pace with the ability to acquire digital images in various modalities. In response to this challenge, we have been developi...

Adaptive Physically Based Models in Computer Graphics

One of the major challenges in physically-based modeling is making simulations efficient. Adaptive models provide an essential solution to these efficiency goals. These models are able to self-adapt in space and time, attempting to provide the best possible compromise between accuracy and speed. This survey reviews the adaptive solutions proposed so far in computer graphics. Models are classifi...
